17th Century barn House. Probably late C17 but with later alterations. Squared rubble with graduated stone slate roof. 4-bay, 2-storey plan with wing to rear right and ruins of former cottage to left. Quoins, continuous dripmould and eaves cornice. Door (now window) has Doric columns supporting a pediment above a massive stone lintel. A later door (and C20 porch) was inserted to extreme left. 2 casement windows on ground floor. 4 first floor windows (2 of which are C19 sashes) with moulded stone architraves. Ridge and gable chimney stacks in brick. The rear wing has a 3-,light double-chamfered window surround, the mullions having been removed. Said to contain datestones "1673 IA PS AL" (John Andrew) and "1653 IL AL" W M Bowman, England in Ashton-under-Lyne 1960. Victoria County History of Lancashire, 1911, vol. 4. |
