Local businesses and parents are being reminded of the rules and regulations in place to safeguard children who are in employment.
Tameside Council education welfare officers will be carrying out spot checks on local employers in the borough during Child Employment Fortnight from 5 – 16 August, making sure that young people aged from 13-16-years-old are working legally and are safe.
The team will be raising awareness of child employment issues and hoping to increase the number of applications for child employment permits.
These permits are a legal requirement for all school-age children who are working and are the employer’s responsibility. They are free of charge and can be obtained from Tameside Council, or the respective local authority area where the young person works.
Cllr Bill Fairfoull, Tameside Council Deputy Executive Leader, said: “Employment can provide a great learning experience for young people as long as they are working in a safe environment. While there are restrictions on the type of work and number of hours a child can do, it’s fantastic to see so many local employers hiring young people and giving them such valuable experience.”
