Library on the move

Date Released - 09/09/2019

BEING housebound doesn’t mean living without anything to read. There’s an off-the-shelf service that not only brings books to the door but can even help with general council queries.

Tameside Home Library Service takes books to those who find it hard to leave their homes because of mobility or sight problems, ill-health, difficulty carrying items, or being a full-time carer.

Two vans cover the whole of the borough calling on users every four weeks. They also go to care homes for the elderly. In August the service visited 279 customers and delivered 1,823 items.

Library assistant Julie Taylor said: “As well as taking books to members we’re able to help in lots of other ways.

“We have a wide knowledge of the authority and often help people get assistance from other services such as the refuse bin pull-out and return service, the visual impairment team and general customer-service matters.”

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member with responsibility for libraries, added: “Our home-service staff are so typical of the people who work for us. They willingly go beyond their job description to help the public in any way they can.

“Books can be as good as friends, and staff do great work in taking books out to people who struggle to leave the house. I’m so proud of everything they do.”

Tameside Home Library Service offers as much choice as any building. Customers can choose from a selection of standard and large print books, talking books on cassette, and compact discs.
