Stoptober is back to help more smokers split up from their relationship with smoking.
This Stoptober, smokers are being encouraged to end a bad relationship and split up with smoking for 28 days from 1 October.
Approximately 17% of people in Tameside smoke and around 2,500 people are admitted to hospital each year due to smoking related conditions, this equates to approximately £13,095,872 each year in hospital costs.
The good news is that the gap between Tameside and the England average is closing 4.4% in 2011 versus 2.6% 2018. Also, the proportion of people who have never smoked has increased by nearly 13% since 2011, that is 94,500 people who have never smoked in 2018 compared to 70,388, that is 24,112 people more who have never smoked.
Data from the University College London (UCL) Smoking Toolkit Study found in England there has been a 2.2% drop in adult smoking prevalence so far in 2019.
Local people who remain smokers in Tameside and Glossop are being encourage to join in with the nation’s biggest quit attempt and is providing them with the information and support they need to split up with smoking now.
A host of events will take place following Be Well Tameside’s launch of Stoptober on 24 September 2019 to offer local people information and advice on how quit smoking:

Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Population Health, Councillor Eleanor Wills, said: “It is well known that smoking is bad for your health and attempting to stop can help you breathe more easily and cough less.
“There is never going to be a good time to quit smoking. However, successful quitting attempts start with the decision to try and making a firm decision to stop smoking will give you the determination and motivation you need.”
