Tameside Council has been successful in getting a share of the £95 million Historic High Street Fund.
A Tameside Council spokesperson said: “Tameside Council is always looking out for opportunities to bid into external funding pots to support initiatives in the borough. These external funding pots by their nature are for schemes based around specific themes or issues, and have limitations on what they can and can’t be spent on. As part of the Stalybridge Town Centre Challenge work a bid was put into the Historic High Street Fund for a heritage walk in the town centre, highlighting and revitalising heritage assets. The extensive Stalybridge Town Centre Challenge consultation undertaken in October 2018 showed strong support for heritage related activity as part of the wider redevelopment. So a bid to the Historic High Street Fund was appropriate, and responsive to resident feedback.
“On Saturday the Government announced a number of areas have been successful in getting a share of the £95 million fund, one of which is Stalybridge. The final decision on the level of funding provided will be made in January 2020, and it will be funding that can only be spent on heritage related activity approved by Historic England. Tameside Council will continue to identify, and bid into, other external funding pots that support initiatives across the borough to regenerate our town centres.”
