Tour of Tameside’s an all-round winner

Date Released - 25/11/2019

THE TOUR of Tameside has proved a win-win concept inspiring thousands of people to get active while raising thousands of pounds for good causes.

It was recognised in this year’s Greater Manchester Sports Awards in the Initiative of the Year category, which champions a physical activity scheme that has made a difference in communities and achieved a positive social outcome.

The unique initiative has got 1,300 people running and 7,000 children more active, and now has a pot of £15,000 to give back to the community to support active, healthy lifestyles and fight childhood obesity.

Organisers are dedicated to getting the people of Tameside active and healthy and this year more than 500 people completed all four challenging stages of the event, with 7,000 schoolchildren also completing their 7-mile challenge.

It was honoured at the Tameside Sports Awards, held at Dukinfield Town Hall in September, leading to it representing Tameside at The Greater Manchester Sports Awards on 15 November. For 19 years, Greater Manchester has celebrated the outstanding commitment and achievements made in physical activity and sport across the area.

The Tour of Tameside is organised by the Running Bee Foundation founded by Chris Bird and Fred Done and supported by Sports Tours International. The Foundation aims to improve the health and wellbeing of local residents and help tackle the challenge of childhood obesity.

Carl Austin-Behan, Chair of Trustee’s, commented: “We’re delighted with the success of the Tour of Tameside, which is going from strength to strength. Not only is the initiative inspiring people to get active and healthy, including thousands of school children, but it’s also raised significant amounts of money to help support community groups with the same aims.

“We’d like to thank everyone who’s supported the Tour of Tameside and look forward to welcoming residents from Tameside and beyond to next year’s event.’’

The event is a four day festival of running that takes in the best sights and sounds that Tameside has to offer. A variety of running routes and terrains challenge participants both physically and mentally, with all stages having been carefully chosen to be achievable for runners of all abilities. It was founded by marathon legend Dr Ron Hill MBE in 1983. The stages include the X-Trail 10k, the six-mile Hell on the Fell, the Hero Half Marathon and the Dr Ron Hyde 7.

Next year’s event starts on 11 June. To sign up or for more information, visit: https://www.runningbeefoundation.co.uk/events-calendar/tour-of-tameside-2/
