TAMESIDE Council and its partners enjoyed double success at the iNetwork Innovation Awards.
The joint council and Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group digital health centre came first the Transforming and Innovating Public Services category, and NAFN Data and Intelligence Services (the National Right to Buy Anti-Fraud Service) won the Effective Information-sharing and Security Award.
Both successes fulfil aspirations laid out in the council’s corporate plan: longer, healthier lives; co-operative working and independence in older age.
Transforming Services was a hotly-contested area with some impressive schemes under consideration. The Tameside entry impressed the judges by showing how new ideas and methods have been embraced to provide a better service. One of its key advances has been in the use of technology to give people better treatment.
Skype removes waiting periods by allowing wardens to swiftly contact medical staff, who have access to patient records, by using a tablet computer. In many cases a diagnosis can be carried out online, removing the need for costly ambulance call-outs and allowing people to stay in the reassuring surroundings of their own home.
In the first six months of the scheme, when it was run on an 8am to 6pm basis, rather than round the clock, only 93 out of more than 1,000 incidents needed an ambulance. This equated to a saving of £500,000.
NAFN was recognised for the way it identifies and shares secure information, and for its use of personal data to provide effective and efficient services.
The small team of fewer than 20 officers is leading the way in economic crime-prevention for councils across the country by using data and intelligence to crack down on fraud. Savings of more than £6 million have been achieves within less than six years.
Cllr Brenda Warrington, the executive leader of Tameside Council, said: “I am extremely proud of our iNetwork success. The two awards we won prove yet again that Tameside Council and its partners are leading the way when it comes to using technology to reduce costs and improving services for our residents and customers.”
