Tameside’s pre-loved bike sale back by unprecedented demand

A pre-loved bike sale is back by popular demand with fully-serviced bicycles available at great prices before Christmas.

Following the success of previous events, Tameside Council has teamed up with Clarendon Square Shopping Centre and Manchester Bike Kitchen – a not-for-profit community interest company – to organise the sale in Hyde on Monday 12 December.

It takes place in a pop-up shop in the former Fulton’s Foods store, 48-50 Rutherford Way from 11am to 3pm.

There will be some great bargains on offer, so it’s the perfect opportunity to pick up a low-cost present for a loved one. Please note that payment is by card only.

The majority of bikes will be for children, but there will be some adult ones too. You can also take your own bicycle to get minor repairs and free Bike Register anti-theft marking.

A similar sale that took place at the shopping centre on 26 November was a huge success with lots of residents attending throughout the day.

More than sixty bikes were bought, six were donated by the public, and several repaired. Jigsaw Homes supported the event and bikes were security marked by Greater Manchester Police.

An event at Inspire Academy Ashton on 18 November saw eight bikes bought, one donated and ten repaired. That was held in support of the new Bee Network route at Chadwick Dam that families are using to walk and cycle to and from school and for short journeys.

Cllr Eleanor Wills, Tameside Council’s executive member for population health and wellbeing, said: “Due to unprecedented demand we have organised another pre-loved bike sale, with the support of Clarendon Square Shopping Centre and Manchester Bike Kitchen, to give more residents the opportunity to buy a good-quality, refurbished bike.

“The cost-of-living surges have put families under increasing strain, so it’s lovely to think that children will be waking up on Christmas Day to receive these superb bikes that their parents haven’t had to break their budgets to afford.”

Councillor Jan Jackson, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Planning, Transport and Connectivity, said: “I’m delighted that our pre-loved bike sales have been such a success and that we’ve been able to arrange another.

“It will give more families the opportunity to take part in cycling, which is a healthier, greener, more sustainable travel option, and make the most of our wonderful cycling and walking routes in Tameside, including the Bee Network.”
