International Women's Day 2023: Tameside Celebrates Women in the Community

Tameside women who inspire and support others in the community are being celebrated this International Women’s Day (March 8).

Tameside Council is shining a light on local women from the past and present who have made a positive difference to the lives of others by featuring them in a social media campaign.

The International Women’s day posts will include the borough’s own suffragette Hannah Mitchell and also Ada Summer, the first woman councillor, mayor and freeman of Stalybridge and also the first woman to adjudicate on an English magistrates’ bench and one of the first women in England to be appointed justice of the peace.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Equalities, said: ‘’International Women’s Day is an opportunity to highlight the positive impact women have and have had within their communities.

“This has been especially evident during the cost of living crisis – there are many women giving up their time to support people in their local community, from supporting community food banks to setting up and maintaining newly established Warm Welcome Hubs or working within vital support services and organisations within Tameside. Women make a huge difference to people’s lives and I’m delighted to support this opportunity to celebrate their contribution.’’ 

As the cost of living crisis affects many residents today, the council is also recognising some of the local women who are supporting residents through difficult times. These include:

• Natalie Nero- Tameside in Work Employment Officer and Cost of Living Champion.
• Liza Ahmed Chowdhury- Community Development Officer for Active Tameside and Cost of Living Champion.
• Moira Kelly- patch co-ordinator for Tameside’s Adult Services.
• Sarah Hardacre- project manager for Global Grooves.
