£20m funding unlocks Stalybridge regeneration projects

REGENERATION projects in Stalybridge including the Civic Hall will receive a welcome boost with the formal acceptance of the £19.9m awarded from the Government’s Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities (DLUHC).

Tameside Council’s Executive Cabinet approved and unlocked the funding this week so that the team can now move forward with utilising the monies to continue to progress plans and engagement for the town’s continued regeneration.

The funding will support work underway through the wider Stalybridge Town Centre Regeneration Programme and help fund additional projects. Some related projects have already received funding, primarily from the High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ), the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for Communities and Place (UKSPF) and the Council’s Capital Programme.

The additional funds mean that repair work and enhancements to the Grade II listed Stalybridge Civic Hall building and work to unlock brownfield and other sites for future residential and commercial development for private investment can move forward. Works also include improvements to the public realm in addition to the existing Heritage Walk project, including pedestrian routes and access for public transport.

The Stalybridge Civic Hall roof restoration project is crucial to the building work due to its significant listed architectural and historic interest. However, the costs of restoring the roof have increased due to external factors and additional funding is now required to deliver the approved scheme which the Council is committed to delivering.

To support the works the Council will utilise £320k of UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) for People and Communities monies and £875k from the £19.9 million Government Capital Regeneration Projects Funding.

A Tameside Council spokesperson stated “The delivery of the projects supported by the Government grant funding will help drive economic growth in Stalybridge and other towns across the borough. Our town centres will be hubs for living, culture, employment and services supporting a sustainable retail sector. We will continue to collaborate and engage with our residents, partners and stakeholders as we move forward with these plans.”
