Whit Friday Band Contests Back to their Best

GLORIOUS music combined with glorious weather as Tameside’s Whit Friday band contests reclaimed their place as the greatest free show on earth.

There were bumper crowds at all nine locations as 53 bands took to the circuit – five more than in 2022. Among them were Musikgesellschaft Oberkirch, who made it all the way to Top Mossley from Switzerland. Caterers found themselves struggling to cope with demand.

One thing that remained the same, however, was the dominance of Foden’s Band who retained the open title which they have effectively made their own since the turn of the century with 19 successes in 20 years.

They gave winning performances of William German’s classic march “The President” at Broadoak, Carrbrook, Denton, Droylsden, Hurst Village, Mossley and Stalybridge New Labour Club.

Mossley retained the local crown and Macclesfield came out on top in the youth section.

Cllr Sangita Patel, Tameside Council’s executive member for heritage and culture, said: “Whit Friday was a truly magical day and I don’t think anyone would dispute that the contests are back to their best after the disruption caused by the covid pandemic and its lockdowns.

“The weather couldn’t have been better and thousands came out to enjoy the sound of brass that is part of Tameside’s soul.

“I’d like to extend my congratulations and thanks to all the volunteers and others who worked so hard to make Whit Friday such a resounding success.”
