Armed Forces Day Flag Flies Proudly over Tameside

Date Released - 20/06/2023

THE Armed Forces Day flag flying above Victoria Park, Denton, is a proud announcement that the countdown to Armed Forces Day has begun.

It was raised on Monday by a group of veterans – all members of Tameside Armed Services Community – and will remain in place until the conclusion of Saturday’s Armed Forces Day celebrations (June 24).

Cllr Vincent Ricci, Tameside Council’s armed forces champion, said: “Our flag is one of thousands that have been raised across the UK in parks and over buildings and homes to mark the start of the week leading up to Armed Forces Day.

“I’m immensely proud of it, and of our borough’s long and close relationship with the forces. Military service is something that must have touched almost every family and I hope lots of people will join us in Victoria Park to enjoy the activities and entertainment and show their support for Britain’s armed forces past, present and future.”

Saturday’s programme starts in the morning when the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Tafheen Sharif, hosts a veterans’ lunch where she and other dignitaries will extend personal thanks to those who have served in the forces.

From 1 to 4pm, the focus switches to the Victoria Park bandstand. As well as live music from the Dave Egerton Band and singer Jo Farrow, there will be displays from Tameside cadet units and many other activities.

Test your strength on the climbing wall, have a try at inflatable archery and axe throwing, or find out about military history and your family’s armed forces connections.

A wide range of organisations offering information and activities will also be present alongside services supporting current and former armed forces personnel.

Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon from Victoria Park Community Centre.
