Reading Champions celebrated for spreading literacy skills

YOUNG people have been praised for spreading a culture of reading across Tameside.

Tameside Council’s School Library Service held a Reading Champions Celebration event at Dukinfield Town Hall on 11 July.

The event saw 250 pupils from schools across the borough commended for taking part in the Reading Champions Programme since September. It featured a short awards ceremony as well as presentations from some schools on what they’ve achieved.

The service runs the programme, a free online scheme aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils that encourages them to reflect on their love of reading, to share that love to inspire others, and to develop a reading culture within school.

All of the pupils have worked hard to boost reading in their schools through a variety of methods including talks in assemblies, the creation of posters, supporting reluctant readers, and encouraging pupils to attend their school or public library.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Education, Achievement and Equalities, Councillor Leanne Feeley, said: “I’d like to send a huge thank you and well done to all the brilliant Reading Champions and everyone involved in this wonderful scheme that’s spreading a love of reading across Tameside.

“Research shows that reading from a young age has a lasting effect on language, vocabulary and literacy skills and is hugely beneficial to children’s development and later academic achievements.

“So by encouraging and influencing others to share in their passion for reading, our Reading Champions are making a big difference to their peers’ lives and future achievements and benefitting Tameside as a whole.”
