NURSERY rhymes – there must be hundreds. They range from old favourites like “Humpty Dumpty”, which has its roots in the Civil War of the 1640s, to more modern offerings such as “The Wheels on the Bus”.
But which is Tameside’s favourite? That’s what Tameside Libraries want to find out.
Over the course of World Nursery Rhyme Week, staff will be encouraging people to vote for their favourite in libraries and through family hubs, schools, nurseries, and on the council’s Facebook page. All families attending the regular Time for a Rhyme sessions in libraries between November 13 and 17 will receive a certificate.
The winning nursery rhyme will be announced on social media the following week.
Cllr Sangita Patel, Tameside Council’s assistant executive member with responsibility for libraries, said: “We all love nursery rhymes, whatever our language or culture. They’re part of growing up and we always remember them.
“Yet they play a bigger part in our lives than we might realise. Nursery rhymes boost vocabulary and language development, and they help children with literacy, numeracy, social, physical and emotional skills. They are a key feature of our Tameside Loves Reading campaign too.
“Most of all though they’re great fun and I can’t wait to find out which nursery rhyme is Tameside’s favourite.”
