National Hate Crime Awareness Week and Grant Opportunities

COMMUNITY grants of up to £500 are being made available to raise awareness of hate crime and celebrate diversity in our communities.

For National Hate Crime Awareness Week from 16 – 20 October, Tameside Council’s Community Safety team and Action Together are launching the Greater Manchester Hate Crime Community Grants.

They will also be running stands with Greater Manchester Police, LGBTQ+ and Greater Manchester Travel Safe, across the borough to help raise awareness of hate crime and encourage them to report it.

• Tuesday 17 October, 11.45am -1.15pm, Tameside College
• Wednesday 18 October, 10am – 12pm, Tameside Hospital
• Wednesday 18 October, 10.30am – 1.30pm, Hyde bus station
• Thursday 19 October, 11.45am -1.15pm, Tameside College

Hate crime is a crime, typically one involving violence that is motivated by prejudice based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity. However, it is believed to be underreported.

Community organisations will be able to apply for up to £500 to help tackle hatred and discrimination by raising awareness of hate crime and how to report it and by delivering activities and workshops within their communities. This can include educational and creative activities aimed at bringing the community together, celebrating diversity and encouraging people to stand up against hate.

Tameside’s Community Safety team are looking for organisations that are planning to host activities and events during or around Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness week 2024, which runs from Monday 5 February until Sunday 11 February.

Applications will open on Action Together’s Funding website on Friday 20 October, with the deadline for completed applications being Friday 1 December.

Councillor Vimal Choksi, Tameside Council Executive Member for Towns and Communities, said: “We want residents to feel safe in our communities and to be able to recognise hate crimes and feel confident in reporting them. The Greater Manchester Hate Crime Grant is an excellent opportunity for community organisations to get involved and helping us reach more people who need support while also celebrating diversity in our borough.”
