Brand new Litter Hub helps Newton community clean up

The local community came out in force last week to support the opening of a new Litter Hub at St Mary’s Church in Newton.

Volunteers, local councillors, and children from Bradley Green Primary School all came out alongside Jonathan Reynolds MP at the opening of the Litter Hub in Newton to help spruce up the area around the school by picking up litter and talking to residents.

The children from Bradley Green Primary School who are all members of the school’s Eco Committee, joined in enthusiastically, really rolling up their sleeves with a smile to improve the cleanliness of the area.

The community litter pick helped demonstrate how easy it is to use the free equipment provided by the Litter Hub, which is offered to residents and groups, and open to anyone who is keen to organise a local litter pick and lend a hand to clean up and help make the borough safer, cleaner, and more attractive.

The Litter Hub’s Champion, Cllr Hugh Roderick, is really  keen to support the community and encourage use of the hub and asks that anyone looking to set up or take part in a local litter pick get in touch with him by email at hugh.roderick@tameside.gov.uk or by calling 07934 916 305 to arrange to borrow equipment.

Cllr Denise Ward Tameside Council Executive Member for Climate Emergency and Environmental Services said: “We are always looking to add more Litter Hubs to the network. They are an invaluable tool that supports the brilliant work of the local community and pupils such as these carried out alongside the Council work done every day to keep us all cleaner and safer. By providing free equipment available from community spaces, residents can play a role too to help us keep Tameside tidy by utilising these resources to take part in clean-ups.

“It’s all about empowering local people to take responsibility and help tackle key areas that need extra attention. Whether it’s a gathering of friends, neighbours, or a community group, we want people to come together and have a fun time while taking pride in their area. By working together, we can continue making Tameside cleaner for everyone.”

There are also eighteen other hubs located across the borough where residents can borrow equipment including gloves, litter pickers and hi vis jackets to help pledge their time to making our streets cleaner.
