Strum on Down to the Ukulele Loan Scheme Launch

FIRST there were books. Then there were records and DVDs. But the latest item you can take out on loan from a Tameside library is none other than a ukulele.

Thanks to a generous donation from the North West Ukulele Project, you can now borrow one of the instruments for free. Just like a book, you can have it one  for three weeks, and renew or return it to any Tameside library.

The small four-stringed instruments, which resemble a guitar but are actually a type of lute, have been popular for more than 100 years. The Beatles were huge enthusiasts and George Harrison was a particular fan, often giving them to rock-star friends.

To launch the Ukulele loan scheme there will be a special event at Stalybridge Library, Trinity Street, on Saturday, 24 February (11am to 12.30pm), with performances by Mossley Ukulele Group and Ashton Ukes.

Come along, listen to some music and try a ukulele. You could also enter a prize draw to win a taster lesson at Stalybridge Music Academy.

Cllr Sangita Patel, Tameside Council’s assistant executive member for heritage, culture and digital inclusivity, said: “Libraries may be seen as the traditional home of books, but music is important too.

“Like reading, it exercises the brain and helps with relaxation and casting off cares. What better way to cheer up than with a jolly tune?

“The Ukulele loan scheme is a great way for people of all ages to get a simple instrument for free and make some music. I would like to thank the North West Ukulele Project and Tameside Libraries for their work in setting up this innovative service.”
