Dementia Music Group showcased for making a difference

A DEMENTIA choir run by Tameside Music Service is being showcased as a successful example of social prescribing in a Greater Manchester video.

The ‘Musical Memories’ group uses music to enrich the lives of people living with dementia by using familiar songs and music to stir memories, using a variety of musical activities to encourage motor skills and so much more.

The support group runs weekly and is a relaxed and nurturing environment for those living with dementia, and their carer’s. The classes provide essential interactions for the users.

The choir has proven so successful it is now to feature in a video, made by Yellow Jigsaw Productions and commissioned by the Dementia Association in association with the GM Wellbeing Partnership.

The video will spotlight the group, highlighting how social prescribing is an effective way to bring together residents to form a community group and improve their well-being.

Tameside Council Deputy Executive Leader for Children and Families Councillor Bill Fairfoull said: “It is great to see the service receiving recognition for the amazing work it does. The thought and care that goes into the sessions is wonderful.

“The classes and truly beneficial to the users and make a huge contribution to their health and wellbeing, both socially and cognitively. It is heartwarming to hear the difference it is making to our residents.”
