CLLR Tafheen Sharif brought the curtain down on her year as civic mayor of Tameside by adding £1,000 to her charity appeal.
The money was generated by her final two fund-raising events – a cultural day at Dukinfield Town Hall and a fun, family cycling day at the Richmond Street circuit in Ashton.
Organised in partnership with the Umeed (Hope) Women’s Group, the cultural day had a “dresses and dishes” theme and featured tasty food from a variety of cultures.
The cycling day, organised with Active Tameside and HSS Sewa, invited families to take part in some healthy, outdoor activity while also enjoying food and henna stalls.
Cllr Sharif said: “I have had tremendous support for my fund-raisers. I did my best to organise varied events for the people of Tameside – including a business networking dinner, a fashion show, an afternoon tea, cultural day and family cycling day – that would appeal to a variety of audiences as well as generating money for good causes.
“I have also had some last-minute fund-raisers including a Qawaali night organised by Khush Amdid women only this week, as well as a cheque presentation from a Mount Snowdon climb, a badminton tournament organised by the Sajjadur Foundation and Amin Babor Chowdhury.
“All my events were very well supported and the money they raised will provide a final and very welcome addition to my charity appeal. Within the next few weeks we should know how much we managed to raise over the year.
“I would like to thank everyone who has attended my charity functions over the entire 12 months of my mayoralty. I really do appreciate the support.
“As well as helping some very good causes that are close to my heart, I’ve wanted my events to bring Tameside’s communities together, spreading love and showing what they all contribute to the borough. Hopefully I have achieved that.”
Cllr Sharif’s charity appeal fund comprises Home-Start (HOST), which offers expert support to families with young children that are going through difficult times; West African Development, which helps ethnic minority communities in Tameside, and We Shall Overcome, an organisation providing support for the homeless.
