Tameside shone brightly at the Greater Manchester Health and Care Champion Awards 2024, held on Thursday 11 July, where local heroes were honoured for their exceptional contributions. The event, hosted at the Science and Industry Museum by former Blue Peter presenter Mwaksy, brought together finalists from across the region, including two standout winners from Tameside and Glossop.
Among the 13 categories, Patricia Bromley and Dr Vikas Gupta stood out for their remarkable achievements. Patricia Bromley, who won the Learner of the Year award, has been an inspirational figure at Tameside Hospital. After leaving school 40 years ago, Patricia embarked on a journey of self-improvement, successfully completing her Level 2 Chef Production Apprenticeship, alongside Level 2 Maths and English. Her commitment to learning has made her a role model for people of all ages, demonstrating that it’s never too late to pursue education and personal growth.
Dr Vikas Gupta was awarded the Leadership Champion accolade. As a GP in Droylsden and Clinical Director of Denton Primary Care Network (PCN), he has been instrumental in transforming local healthcare. Dr Gupta’s efforts to build strong partnerships across various sectors have led to improved integrated care for a population of 53,000. He is noted for his patient-centric approach, including the introduction of community clinics that offer more accessible healthcare services.
The event also featured the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, presenting the Mayor’s Special Recognition Award to Matthew Coles for his outstanding work as a nurse associate. Other highlights included the People's Champion Award, chosen by Hits Radio listeners, which recognised Adam Hardaker's dedication to supporting individuals with learning difficulties and disabilities.
Cllr Eleanor Wills, Tameside Council Executive Member for Population Health and Wellbeing, said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone dedicated to making a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of residents.
