£810,000 has been secured from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) for Tameside Council to improve travel safety along the A560 in Hattersley.
This funding, part of the Streets for All initiative, will focus on enhancing walking and cycling routes along the A560. The Council’s Executive Cabinet has approved drawing down over £800,000 from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) to progress work on a business plan.
This financial boost will enable the Council to develop a comprehensive business case and conduct a public consultation to refine the plans.
Currently, the A560 in Hattersley has poor connectivity and road safety issues for walking and cycling between communities with a lack of pedestrian crossings, walkways, and junctions. The proposed improvements aim to address these issues, enhancing the area's infrastructure.
Attention will also be given to the Hattersley viaduct, a key structure in the area that crosses the railway line. At one hundred years old, the viaduct requires essential maintenance, including drainage and waterproofing work due to its age.
Other proposals include measures like reducing speed limits, improving road surfaces, junctions, bus stops, and widening roads to support pedestrians and cyclists.
Cllr Laura Boyle Executive Member for Housing, Homelessness, Planning, Transport & Connectivity said: “Investment in the A560 area is crucial to making Hattersley safer and more accessible. The CRSTS funding will help reconnect communities and manage travel impacts around future developments. “It is however really important that we get the views of the local community, residents, and stakeholders so all the proposals being developed will go out for consultation before any decisions are made.”
More information will be released over the coming weeks.
