STUDENTS in Tameside have been congratulated after collecting their GCSE exam results.
Many local students have gone on to achieve remarkable success in their exams to progress onto sixth form, college, apprenticeships, training or work.
Grading returned to pre-pandemic standards in 2023, making this year’s results more comparable with last year and with 2019, the last year that summer exams took place before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tameside Council, schools and colleges have worked hard to ensure that support is in place to help students get on the right post-16 pathways, including the right college course or training option.
Councillor Teresa Smith, Tameside Council Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “Congratulations to our Class of 2024 GCSE students on their achievements. I’d like to thank Tameside’s teachers, parents and carers for supporting the borough’s children to achieve their success.
"Our focus is on ensuring that all our young people are supported to get on the right post-16 pathway for them.”
GCSEs are graded using a numerical system from 9 to 1, rather than the previous A to E system, with a 4 needed for a "standard pass" and 5 for a "strong pass."
Weekly drop-in sessions take place at the Council’s People Place, in Ashton-under-Lyne every Wednesday, 1-4pm, for 16–24-year-olds for career advice, and support is on hand from Tameside Futures from 11am-4pm on results day on first floor of Tameside One and on Friday 23 August. The Tameside Futures Team will also be on the first floor of Tameside One from Tuesday 27 August until Friday 30 August, from 11-4pm, for young people to drop in for advice.
