Date Released - 02/09/2024

RESIDENTS who are interested in fostering as a career opportunity are invited to come and have a chat with Tameside Council’s Fostering team at the upcoming Jobs Fair.

The Fostering team, social workers and foster carers will be on hand at the Tameside Jobs Fair on Wednesday 25 September, from 10am till 1pm at Dukinfield Town Hall to answer any questions residents may have about fostering.

Tameside Council are looking for more Tameside residents to come forward and become foster carers to provide stable and loving homes for vulnerable local children. The council provides foster carers with full training, a support and an allowance.

Fostering is not a one size fits all, and there are various fostering opportunities to suit different schedules and lifestyles. Types of fostering can include short-term, long-term, specialist, emergency and respite fostering.

The Council’s fostering service is not for profit, and the priority is the welfare of the children and young people.

When Tameside residents foster for Tameside Council it benefits the local children in care as it allows them to remain in their local area, schools and close to friendships they’ve already formed. As a result, creating a certain level of stability in an unstable time in their lives.

The criteria to apply is to be aged 21 or over, have a spare room in your property, and to be able to provide a safe and loving home. People from all backgrounds can apply.

Arriving soon to Tameside is Mockingbird, an award winning and pioneering programme led by The Fostering Network in the UK, delivers sustainable foster care. It is an evidence-based model structured around the support and relationships an extended family provides.

The model nurtures the relationships between children, young people and foster families supporting them to build a resilient and caring community.

Led by a hub home carer and liaison worker, the constellation community offers vital peer support and guidance alongside social activities and sleepovers to strengthen relationships and permanence.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Children’s Services, Councillor Teresa Smith, said: “Fostering is not only a great job opportunity for our residents but it also changes the lives of the local children who are currently in care.

“By having a quick chat with our Fostering team about what may be the best fit for you could inspire you to enquire and start your fostering journey.

“If you can’t make it we can still support and answer any questions that you may have by getting in touch using the details below.”
