SPOOKY season is fast approaching and so for the month of October residents are being encouraged to Think Green when it comes to all things Halloween themed.
The annual campaign, Recycle Week, will run from 14 until 20 October with this year’s theme being ‘Rescue Me’, which is focusing on rescuing items heading for the refuse bin.
Many materials can be creatively used to make Halloween decorations, such as cardboard for tombstones and masks, old white sheets that can be upcycled into ghouls and ghosts, green glass bottles can be transformed into Frankenstein’s head, and toilet paper tubes changed into candles, spiders and bats.
Natural resources can also be used such as leaves, pumpkins, pinecones, and twigs for a rustic and zero-waste Halloween theme. Get inspired here.
Residents can collect a pre-loved Halloween costume from Dukinfield Library on Saturday 12 October, from 10am till 12pm. During this day, the library staff are also hosting a stories and craft session, from 11am till 11:30am.
By thinking green residents will not only save money but will also be supporting the environment as the majority of Halloween decorations available to buy are made from single-use plastic. Plastic production contributes to pollution, resource depletion, and ocean contamination.
For those hosting a Halloween party, why not use reusable or biodegradable cups, cutlery and plates.
Make sure not to spare any part of the pumpkin by making tasty meals, click here for inspiration. Please dispose of any Halloween pumpkins in the brown food and garden waste recycling bin or on a compost heap.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Climate Emergency & Environmental Services Cllr Denise Ward said: “I think this is a wonderful opportunity for friends, families and neighbours to get involved in thinking green for this Halloween.
“It’s giving everyone a chance to make small changes that collectively make a big difference to our environment, all whilst having fun in getting creative!”
