TAMESIDE bin crews will be working as hard as ever over Christmas and New Year but some households will see changes to their collections.
Brown-bin collections will cease across the borough on Wednesday 25 December 2024 (Christmas Day) and will not restart until Wednesday 8 January 2025.
Residents will see the following changes over the period:
25 December (Christmas Day)
If you are due a green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Friday 27 December. If you are due a black (recycling) or a blue (paper) bin collection, it will be collected on Tuesday 31 December.
26 December (Boxing Day)
If you are due a green bin collection, it will be collected on Monday 30 December. If you are due a black or a blue bin collection, it will be collected on Thursday 2 January.
27, 30 and 31 December
Normal collections except for brown bins.
1 January 2025 (New Year’s Day)
If you are due a green bin collection, it will be collected on Friday 3 January. If you are due a black and/or blue bin collection, they will be collected on Monday 6 January.
2 January to 7 January
Normal collections except for brown bins.
8 January
Full collections begin again including brown bins.
Real Christmas trees can be recycled in aid of Willow Wood Hospice, Ashton, between 6 and 10 January. Register for collection at www.just-helping.org.uk/register-tree. Alternatively, chop it up and put it in your brown bin. Don’t forget to take the decorations off first.
The council will collect any additional recyclable Christmas waste which is left out with your black or blue recycling bins if it’s in a clear or labelled bag.
If you don’t already have the council bin app, download it from Apple Store or the Google Play Store for updates and alerts for your Christmas waste and recycling collection arrangements.
Please park considerately so that waste vehicles have unimpeded access to all areas and roads where bins are kept.

Cllr Laura Boyle, Tameside Council’s executive member for environmental services and neighbourhoods, said: “Despite the holiday changes, people shouldn’t see too much disruption over Christmas, but please make sure you check the dates so you know the right day for the right bin.
“In addition, and on behalf of the council, I want to thank all the residents who protect the environment by recycling. Their efforts mean the amount of waste we send for disposal is as small as possible.
“Finally, I want to extend my thanks to our bin crews who work so hard not only over Christmas, but throughout the year and in all conditions.”
