TAMESIDE community groups and organisations are being invited to take part in a opportunity to help tackle inequality.
Cllr Taf Sharif, the council’s recently-appointed executive member for population health and equalities, wants the wider community to help her shape the future of the authority’s inequalities reference group (IRG).
To that end, she is offering an open invitation to the first meeting of 2025 which will be an inequalities workshop. It takes place at Dukinfield Town Hall on Tuesday 28 January (2 to 4pm).
Cllr Sharif said: “With recent challenges, I believe it is more important than ever that we work together to reduce inequalities in Tameside, embrace diversity, and ensure we meet the needs of all our residents.
“Hopefully, people will take the opportunity to come to what is the first workshop of its kind in the borough and work with us in developing change. It offers the perfect chance to refresh and renew the IRG’s approach, contribute to its development, and create positive change.
“I want to bring together our community groups, elected members, policymakers and public services, and offer a valuable opportunity to collaborate, share recommendations and provide constructive challenge to address inequalities we are facing in Tameside.”
The Independent Reference Group, which was created five years ago, is a forum for the sharing of ideas and thoughts on carrying out the borough’s responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and the public-sector equality duty.
Membership is drawn from councillors; the NHS; the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCSFE) sector and Tameside Independent Advisory Group.
While the IRG is not a decision-making body, it acts in an advisory role to Tameside Health and Wellbeing Board, making recommendations on how inequality can be addressed.
