Restoration and improvement works due to start on art gallery

Date Released - 21/01/2025

Work is due to start to improve access to Astley Cheetham Art Gallery as part of a wider programme to regenerate Stalybridge’s cultural quarter and historical assets.

The project - being delivered by Tameside Council and funded by the Government’s Capital Regeneration Programme - will see a lift and ramp access installed at the gallery, which is located on the first floor of the listed building above Stalybridge Library.

It will also include repair and restoration works to the building as well as including other improvements to the lighting and display areas in the gallery.

The gallery will temporarily close from 25 January 2025 for approximately one year while the works are carried out. The full art collection is due to be packaged and transported to safe storage for the duration.

In the meantime, the art collection will be shared online on the council website at www.tameside.gov.uk/museumsgalleries/astley/highlights where possible and on Tameside Council and In Tameside social media channels. Many of the pieces from the collection can also be viewed on the ArtUK website at:  Art UK | Discover Artworks

People can find out more about the project and wider plans for the regeneration of Stalybridge at two information drop-in sessions to be held at Stalybridge Library on 28 and 29 January from 3pm to 6.30pm.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture Cllr Leanne Feeley said: “I know how much Astley Cheetham Gallery is valued in our community and we want to make sure it can be enjoyed for generations to come. The works will address essential repairs and restoration works while also future proofing the historic building and improving access, lighting and the display areas.

“This is a really exciting time for Stalybridge as we regenerate our historical assets and further develop the cultural quarter, which is becoming a real draw for residents and visitors. The gallery works are a positive step in this journey and, while I realise people will miss being able to visit the gallery while it is temporary closed, I hope they take the opportunity to enjoy some of our collection online until we are in a position to safely reopen with our improved offer.”
