More bin trucks and crews agreed for Tameside

KEY measures including nearly £2m investment in the next two years have been agreed to further improve Tameside’s waste and recycling service.

Tameside Council’s Executive Cabinet today approved plans to further invest into the service to provide more bin trucks and crews and make use of in cab digital technology.

The aim is to achieve more efficient and completed rounds, providing a further improved and reliable service for residents.

Tameside’s waste collection service empties nearly 11 million bins every year and is performing well when benchmarked against other comparable local authorities.

But with increases in the number of homes in the borough, national waste policy changes and the requirement to collect additional waste streams, there are further challenges ahead which need the additional investment.

The service improvements will also include the roll out of food waste recycling collections to rural homes and flats that don’t currently have them by April 2026.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhood Cllr Laura Boyle said: “It’s brilliant to see we’re performing well when compared to other councils but there’s always room for improvement – no one wants missed bin collections  - so we want to make sure we’re doing what we can to provide the best possible service to residents.

“This investment will help us get more bin crews out and complete more rounds while also having technology in our bin wagons to help make the rounds more efficient, improve communication and improve health and safety. It will also help us to respond to changes in national policy and ensure we are doing everything we can to help continue to increase recycling rates.

“We have several more steps to follow to ensure we get the best value for our money, so we won’t see the changes right away but this is really good news for the long term delivery of the service. In the meantime, my thanks goes to our waste team and crews for their hard work, day in day out, in serving our local community.”
