Following further discussions with traders and retailers an additional car park is being added to the existing offer aimed to support traders in Ashton while the market ground development works take place.
Free parking is already available all day on Saturdays and Sundays at Union Street, with reduced parking charges at Old Cross Street of £1 for up to 3 hrs throughout the week.
The offer is now being extended to include Church Street 1 Car Park with up to 3hrs parking for £1 throughout the week.
The move comes of the back of the launch of the council’s consultation on their wider parking offer in Tameside. The council wants to ensure any new offer learns from what works well in other areas, supports residents and businesses and helps to drive growth and increased visitors.
The consultation will run for six weeks until Wednesday 12 March. You can give feedback via the consultation at www.tameside.gov.uk/parkingreview or by emailing parkingreview2025@tameside.gov.uk.
On the ground exciting developments are underway in Ashton Market Square. Significant progress has already been made with the existing market stalls removed, and the outdoor market now temporarily relocated to Fletcher Square. In the coming weeks, work will begin on constructing the new canopy area, ready for the relaunch of the revitalised market early next year.
Cllr Stephen Homer, Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity said:
“We are committed to minimising the inevitable disruption for businesses, traders, and visitors. The reduced and free parking offer combined with new events such as ‘Love in the Market’ this February will hopefully support footfall in the town centre, and I would encourage everyone to continue to visit and shop local.”
