A young woman from Tameside has been awarded the Greater Manchester High Sheriff Young Citizen Award for her admirable contributions to the community.

Seventeen-year-old Ellie Halpin, from Carrbrook, selflessly volunteers for Live Great Adventures where she gives her time and skills for events that prioritise mental health and suicide prevention. Ellie’s contributions to the team were vital in the success of more than 140 events in 2024, securing over 2,500 tickets.

Demonstrating her resilience, dedication and empathy, Ellie is also a young carer for her mother supporting her with tasks such as cooking, household jobs and providing emotional support. Her determination to pass her driving test to further support her mother is exemplary and further proves her empathetic nature.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Children and Families Councillor Teresa Smith said: “Congratulations to Ellie on winning such a prestigious award. I am delighted that a young person from Tameside with such drive and selflessness has received this honour. Well done Ellie!”

Ellie supports the organisation in numerous ways such as event coordination, admin tasks, safeguarding and safety marshalling all whilst creating a safe and inclusive space for all participants.

Ellie’s citation for the award states that her efforts have directly contributed to increased morale amongst attendees, many of whom have expressed her caring nature and kindness.

Amongst prioritising supporting people in their mental health and wellbeing, Ellie has also supported a local business on a voluntary basis when they have been short-staffed. Her citation states that she brings a constant positive social change in the community whilst also attending college amongst her various responsibilities.

Her contributions in many different aspects make her entirely deserving of the Young Citizen award 2025.

Ellie is one of just 10 winners across Greater Manchester and the selected winner for Tameside.
