Hattersley regeneration projects bring community benefits and local growth

Date Released - 25/04/2025

Hattersley has continued its significant transformation over the last year, brought about by the creation of quality homes, new jobs, and improved community facilities to support local residents.

The changes have been driven forward through partnerships between Tameside Council, Onward Homes, and Homes England, with significant investment from both the public and private sector.

Over the last year several projects have been completed, bringing some fantastic key achievements which have improved public spaces, created new housing, and provided valuable community support to Hattersley residents. Various projects have also supported youth engagement, provided specialised education facilities, and assisted residents to find work and training opportunities.

A Work and Skills coach has been supporting residents over the last three years – with thirty-eight moving into employment, 190 undertaking training, 137 moving into volunteering, and 786 being helped to take first steps towards work. The board have now extended this funding until March 2026.

The Council and Onward Homes are investing £4 million into public realm infrastructure. Two new playgrounds have been completed at Porlock Ave, bringing the total to four new play areas to Hattersley. Ongoing projects include the creation of a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and the opening up of Waterside Clough, with construction starting in summer 2025 and expected to be completed by the end of the year. Additional improvements to other gateways and parking provisions are also being planned.

The district centre is also being further developed, Maple Grove are working with Onward to bring forward the final development including an Aldi Discount Food Store, a Costa drive-through, and other additional Trade Counter Units. This is a major milestone in the overall regeneration of Hattersley and the final phase of the district centre. Planning approval was granted in April 2024, and work is due to start on site next month with construction expected to be completed in June 2026 with fit out by the occupiers to follow.

The Hattersley Central development, funded by Homes England and Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), has delivered ninety-one extra care homes, fifty-five affordable rent homes, and fifteen shared ownership homes. New housing schemes, including the Mottram Police Station site, are set to begin construction in June 2025 and be completed by June 2026.

In other areas improvement work has been undertaken on Stockport Road Underpass and the new Hawthorns Primary School, opened in September 2024, providing 246 places for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Youth engagement was given a boost in with funding for PAC-CIC (Prime Active Communities - Corporate Interest Company), supported by a Homes England donation, this has allowed positive interactions for young people (ages 9-18). Successful activities have included Hattersley Creative Hub, Beats and Bars, and Hatts Chat and Giggles Podcast fostering community partnerships. This valuable work is set to continue over the next year.

Councillor Andrew McLaren, Deputy Leader (Growth, Housing and Homelessness) said:“ The fantastic work happening in Hattersley is amazing, it really shows the power and importance of how working together with the private sector and partners to pool resources can bring forward growth, creating homes, jobs and facilities to ensure our communities will continue to thrive.”
