A decline in childminders nationally is bringing opportunity for those looking for flexible working in Tameside.
According to the latest figures from Gov.uk, the number of childminders across the country has declined over the past decade, from 56,200 in 2013 to 27,900 in 2023 - a fall of 50%. Numbers across Tameside have seen a decrease of one third in just five years.
Tameside Council are looking to address the much-needed gap in childcare support by hosting an information event this month about the role of childminding and the benefits this flexible working option can bring.
The role allows childminders to work their own hours, fitting in with family circumstances and bringing a work/life balance. Working as a childminder in Tameside also provides access to the supportive Childminding Network to keep informed on local and national updates, network with other childminders, and gain Continuing Professional Development.
The informative event will discuss what childminding involves, the Local Authority support that is available to Ofsted registered childminders, and the steps to take to become one. There will also be an opportunity to hear from an Ofsted registered childminder and ask questions.
Gemma, a childminder in Tameside said: “I love the flexibility it offers and the freedom. We go out every day exploring, whether that's the park, playgroups, or museums. I have a network of childminder friends around me that are amazing and are always on hand to offer support and guidance if I need it.”
She went on to say; “I knew the only way that I could still work with children and be there for my own three small children every day was to become a childminder.”
Tameside Council Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Councillor Leanne Feeley, said: “Childminders have been a necessary part of many families lives for generations, and their caring support have helped parents raise their children so they can continue to work.
“The role of a childminder is not only a nurturing one but offers a crucial extension to families that is essential for busy parents, so this event will provide a great insight into a valuable role.”
The event will take place on Tuesday 17 June from 6.30pm–8.30pm at East Family Hub, The Rowans, Mossley, Tameside, OL5 9DR.
