ABUSE can happen to anyone, and Tameside Adult Social Care, the police, fire service and many more organisations are highlighting elder abuse, the support available and how to raise concerns.
Tameside Adult Safeguarding Partnership Board (TASPB) realise that the abuse of older people is a reality and work together to prevent and reduce the risks of abuse and neglect.
Elder abuse can take many forms including domestic, physical, psychological, financial, sexual, discriminatory and organisational abuse. It can also include neglect, self-neglect or modern slavery. This can be a one-off occurrence or recurring, some people may even be affected by more than one type at a time. It’s everybody’s business to raise and report concerns if they see it happening to someone elderly.
To raise awareness of support for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD, June 15), TASPB hosted a community support event at St Martin’s Church in Droylsden. This was a drop-in event where people could talk to over 20 different support organisations including adults social care, the police, fire service, Jigsaw Homes, Age UK and many more.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Adult Social Care Cllr John Taylor said: ‘’The abuse of older people is a sad reality, and in Tameside we are creating and sustaining strong partnerships to support those who are experiencing it.
‘’Everyone deserves to live a life free from fear. We all need to play our part in keeping our communities safe, if someone you know is experiencing abuse, neglect or self-abuse, please get in touch with us for support.’’
