Residents urged to check MMR vaccination ahead of summer holidays

Date Released - 17/06/2025

With summer holidays fast approaching, Tameside residents are encouraged to check their MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccinations are up to date, to help prevent the spread of measles.

Recent data shows a rise in measles cases across Greater Manchester, with Tameside Council’s Public Health team reminding families to check their vaccination records, especially before travelling abroad, as measles outbreaks are also being seen overseas.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to serious complications, particularly in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. The infection spreads easily through coughs and sneezes, and just one case can lead to an outbreak in schools, nurseries, or busy travel hubs.

There’s no specific medical treatment for measles and the MMR vaccine is the safest and most effective protection. Two doses are required for full immunity, and it’s never too late to catch up. The vaccine is free and available through all GP practices.

Symptoms of measles include a high fever, sore red eyes, and a blotchy red-brown rash that usually starts on the face before spreading. Anyone with symptoms should stay at home and contact their GP or NHS 111 for advice. It is important not to visit healthcare settings in person to avoid spreading the virus, unless seriously unwell. People with measles should stay off nursery, school or work for at least four days from when the rash first appears.

Councillor Taf Sharif, Tameside Council Executive Member for Population Health and Wellbeing, said: "We want everyone in Tameside to enjoy a safe and healthy summer. Measles is not just a childhood illness; it can cause serious complications for people of all ages, so please check your vaccination status and book your MMR if needed."

Residents are encouraged to act now to ensure they and their families are protected before the summer break. For more information about measles and how to get vaccinated, visit www.gmintegratedcare.org.uk/measles.
