Plans have been approved that will bring significant Investment in the future of Hyde Town Hall and its future role as a heritage and community hub.
Tameside Council is set to consider proposals for a major roof refurbishment and repairs at Executive Cabinet next week which will improve the hall as a venue and protect it structurally shaping it to become a cornerstone of civic and community life.
The historic building, has suffered from persistent roof leaks in recent years, resulting in water damage and increasing maintenance challenges. The proposed works aim to make the roof fully watertight, improve long-term maintenance access, and safeguard the building’s future as a vital community and service asset.
If approved, the Council will allocate £950,000 from its existing capital maintenance budget to carry out the essential repairs. This funding forms part of a broader £1.896 million capital resource approved in 2021 for planned, preventative maintenance across the Council’s estate.
Hyde Town Hall is home to a wide range of services and facilities, including:
Cllr Councillor Hugh Roderick, Tameside Council Executive Member for Finance and Resources said, “This investment is about protecting the heritage of Hyde by ensuring Hyde Town Hall is in a condition to play a central role in the life of the town. These works are essential to preserve its structure, make ongoing maintenance easier and cheaper, and support services and events in the building.”
The building last underwent a light refurbishment in 2015, with further upgrades to the heating system and asbestos removal completed in 2024. However, recent winters have seen repeated incidents of water ingress, underlining the urgent need for roof repairs. Last year £500,000 was invested in the building.
If the proposal is approved, the Council will move forward with procuring a contractor to carry out the works, which will take three to six months.
