Six fines to be issued after evidence found during Hyde day of action

Date Released - 18/07/2025

Six people will be fined after Tameside Council officers investigated litter and flytipping during an Our Streets Day of Action of Hyde.

Pupils from Greenfield Primary School, community volunteers and police community support officers joined ward councillors and staff from the council’s waste enforcement and community safety teams for the litter pick event in Hyde town centre on 17 July.

The day of action, organised by the council, also included a community safety information stand in Clarendon Square Shopping Centre, where people were able to get advice and guidance on personal safety and home security and discuss any local concerns.

Litter and flytipped waste were removed from the streets and officers found evidence traced to six individuals, who will each receive fixed penalty notices and face prosecution if these fines are not paid.

The council has issued 123 fixed penalty notices for waste related offences since the start of the year.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods Cllr Laura Boyle said: “This is yet another great result from our regular Our Streets days of action. Thank you so much to everyone involved for your efforts and enthusiasm – it was fantastic to see the school children and community volunteers in Hyde joining our members, staff and partners in helping to keep the town centre clean and tidy.

“The school contacted us afterwards to say the children enjoyed it so much they have asked to take part in any future litter picks, which is just wonderful in inspiring our next generation to take care of and pride in their local communities. Well done to all the children involved!

“We have street cleaners and waste enforcement officers out every day clearing and investigating litter and flytipping but looking after our streets is everyone’s responsibility and we need the whole community to work with us to tackle the scale of the issue and help take care of their neighbourhoods.

“Dropping litter and flytipping waste are criminal offences – there is no excuse for either and they spoil the local area for everyone. We will always take enforcement action against those responsible where we find evidence.”
