Date Released - 18/08/2025

Hundreds of residents shared in a day of celebration and reflection at Tameside Council’s VJ Day event on Friday 15 August.

The event, held at Kind George V Playing Fields, Ashton, was held to mark and honour 80 years since the Victory in Japan and the end of World War Two.

Visitors gathered for a free celebration of family fun alongside remembrance for those who fought in the war, and to share appreciation for our freedom today.

The busy event saw family friendly activities, live performances, and interactive workshops, including Outdoor Arts sessions.

Executive Member for Finance and Resources and Armed Forces, Cllr Hugh Roderick said: “A huge thank you to the teams for organising a great event to commemorate such an important occasion.

“The impressive turnout reflects Tameside’s deep appreciation for servicemen and women past and present and all they’ve done for us. It is fantastic that, 80 years on, the community can come together to remember and celebrate the end of the Second World War.”
