Residents, businesses, and potential service users are invited to take part in a public consultation aimed at supporting the growth of Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (EVI) in Tameside.

The consultation, run by Tameside Council, aims to speed up the rollout of charging points for electric and hybrid vehicles, supporting the council’s ambition to be Net Zero by 2038.

The consultation period will begin on 1 September 2025 and run until 27 October 2025. A significant focus of the strategy is making use of the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, through which Tameside has been allocated £1.3 million.

Tameside Council declared a climate emergency in February 2020, and moving to Electric Vehicles (EVs) is a key step in meeting reduced emissions targets.

Responses to the consultation will provide valuable insight into priorities, preferred locations, and potential barriers for the EVI Strategy. The council aims to address the needs of all residents in the borough, including elderly residents and those with disabilities.

There will be opportunities to complete the consultation and raise questions or concerns in person at local events, as well as through two online webinars:

Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods Cllr Laura Boyle said: “Since declaring a climate emergency in 2020, as a borough, we have explored ways in which we can resolve this. With transportation making up approximately one-third of the Tameside’s carbon dioxide emissions, increasing our EVI is such an important step forward for us.

“We have such positive hopes for the strategy and want to ensure we get as many responses for the consultation as we can, to increase uptake and movement to EVs and really help tackle the climate emergency.”

Cllr Steven Homer Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, said: “The consultation is a perfect opportunity for residents and businesses to inform the council about any queries or concerns they may have around the implementation of EVI. We are keen to move towards a more forward-thinking borough.

“We are encouraging everyone to take part and provide responses so that the development will best suit and represent the needs of Tameside, including making sure EVI charging points are accessible for everyone.”
