Tameside residents are being urged to check their electoral registration details or risk losing their chance to vote on decisions that affect them.
With local elections taking place in Tameside in May 2026, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part.
The annual canvass allows the council to keep the electoral register up to date, to identify who risks losing their voice at elections, and to encourage them to register before it’s too late.
Recent home movers and younger people in particular are urged to check their details.
Tameside Council Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer Harry Catherall said: “Every year, we contact residents to make sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up to date. To make sure you don’t lose your say at upcoming elections, simply follow the instructions sent to you. If you have no changes in the household just use our automated phone line or even just text back that there’s no change, which is what I did – it’s quick and easy. The easiest way for any new residents, or young people becoming eligible to vote for the first time is to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.”
“I would particularly encourage younger people – those due to turn 18, those who have turned 18 recently - and those who have recently moved house to check they are registered to vote.
“An added benefit of registering on electoral role is it helps your credit rating - if you’re applying for any form of loan or financing ,being registered to vote helps give confidence to lenders.”
The council has also contacted residents who use a postal vote to renew their application. New Government rules mean that postal votes now expire after three years and anyone who has held their postal vote since before 31 October 2023 will need to renew their application by 31 January 2026. The quickest and easiest way to apply for your postal vote renewal is online here: Apply for a postal vote - GOV.UK You can also access the Government Website online at any library.
Residents with questions about their registration status can contact their local council’s electoral services team on 0161 342 8355.
