Improvements to Denton Town Hall set to begin following planning approval

Date Released - 21/10/2025

A planning application has been submitted that, if approved, will pave the way for improvement works at Denton Town Hall.

The first phase of work will involve the demolition of an unstable single-storey side extension on the western side of the building, adjacent to Victoria Park helping to preserve the historically important Town Hall and valued community space for the future. This follows a detailed assessment by Seven Architecture, appointed as Conservation Architect in September 2025, to review the building’s condition and recommend essential remedial works.

The extension, added between 1955 and 1965, is not part of the Town Hall’s original 1889 structure and has been condemned due to significant structural movement and subsidence. Cracking throughout the building, both internally and externally, has raised concerns about the long-term integrity of this historic landmark.

Removing the extension will enable critical underpinning and structural repairs to the main building, ensuring its continued use as a public library and civic space. The demolition will be carried out with care, preserving original materials and features, with salvaged bricks reused for repairs.

Further works will include drainage improvements, tree management, and ground levelling to help prevent future subsidence.

Councillor Stephen Homer, Tameside Council Executive Member (Towns, Transport and Connectivity), said: “We recognise the historical and communal importance of Denton Town Hall and are committed to securing its future. The removal of the unsafe extension is a necessary step to protect the integrity of the building and ensure it remains a safe and accessible space for the community. This forms part of our wider regeneration plans for Denton, supported by Government funding, to make the town a place everyone is proud to call home.”
