Planning consent has been given for the next phase of work to the Town Hall steps which will see the restoration of the iconic town hall steps.
The work forms part of the £19.87m Levelling Up Funding allocated by Central Government to specifically regenerate the town centre.
The approved plans will see the steps returned to their original 1840 design, while improving safety and accessibility. The works include:
The consent also includes a lighting strategy to ensure this important historic asset will be well lit and showcased as it should be.
This restoration complements the ongoing transformation of Market Square, creating a vibrant civic space for events and visitors. Work on the steps will be completed in line with the Market Square works in Spring 2026.
Changes to the site will be made over the next week meaning the pedestrian walkway in front of the Town Hall will be moved to allow Tameside’s Engineers to continue excavation works and commence works on the steps. Pedestrians will still be able to walk around the rear of the Town Hall, and the new walkway will mean people will get to experience the newly laid paving and get a feel for the quality of the finish. Clear signage will be in place to guide visitors, and access to surrounding businesses will be maintained throughout.
The Council is also now progressing with feasibility and design work to transform the Town Hall into a vibrant space by 2030 (subject to Executive Cabinet approval).
The vision for the restored Town Hall blends heritage with modern functionality, creating a vibrant hub for civic, cultural, and commercial activity.
The restoration will happen in phases, with construction expected to start in 2028 and finish by 2030, subject to confirmation of funding. Every step will meet strict heritage and planning standards.
Councillor Stephen Homer, Executive Cabinet Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, said: ““We’re thrilled that planning approval has been granted for this important heritage project marking the start of the vision for the future. The Town Hall steps will once again become a proud focal point for Ashton, combining historic character with modern accessibility.”
