TAMESIDE bin crews will be working as hard as ever over Christmas and New Year but some households will see changes to their collections.
There will be no brown bin collections from 25 December until 7 January inclusive – this is to ensure there are crews available to catch up with collections following Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Residents will also see the following changes over the period:
Thursday 25 December - No Collections
If you are due a green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Monday 29 December
If you are due a black (comingled recycling waste) or a blue (paper recycling waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Wednesday 31 December
Friday 26 December - No Collections
If you are due a green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Tuesday 30 December
If you are due a black (comingled recycling waste) or a blue (paper recycling waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Friday 2 January
Thursday 1 January - No Collections
If you are due a green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Monday 5 January
If you are due a black (comingled recycling waste) or a blue (paper recycling waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Tuesday 6 January
All other green, black and blue bin collections are due to run as normal over the festive period.
Download the free Tameide bin app from Apple Store or Google Play Store where you can check the date of your collections, set reminders and report missed/lost bins. Latest updates are also posted on this page.
Real Christmas trees can be recycled in aid of Willow Wood Hospice, between 5 and 9 January 2026 when your tree will be taken away with no hassle, no waste and needles in your car! Register your real Christmas tree to be collected by visiting www.just-helping.org.uk/register-tree. Simply enter your postcode and submit your details via the online form. Registration closes at 11.59pm on 4 January 2026.
Alternatively, chop it up and put it in your brown bin for collections from 8 January. Don’t forget to take your decorations off first.
Crews will collect any additional recyclable waste which is left out with your black or blue recycling bin in a clear or labelled bag so it is clear it is recycling.
Please park considerately so that waste collection vehicles have unimpeded access to all areas and roads where bins are kept.
Cllr Laura Boyle, Tameside Council’s executive member for environmental services and neighbourhoods, said: “Despite the holiday changes, people shouldn’t see too much disruption over Christmas, but please make sure you check the dates so you know the right day for the right bin.
“In addition, and on behalf of the council, I want to thank all the residents who protect the environment by recycling. Their efforts mean the amount of waste we send for disposal is as small as possible.
“Finally, I want to extend my thanks to our bin crews who work so hard not only over Christmas, but throughout the year and in all conditions.”
