A bold new vision for Denton that will deliver a greener, safer, and more vibrant town centre is up for approval by Tameside Council’s Executive Cabinet this month.

Backed by £16.8 million in funding from the UK Government, subject to government agreement, and additional funding from Transport for Greater Manchester, the plans include a series of projects which will help regenerate Denton.

The proposals have been shaped by extensive community engagement, with residents prioritising improved transport, youth facilities, safety measures, and green spaces.

The vision, developed by leading urban design specialists Planit IE working with the Council’s Strategic Growth Team, proposes a series of transformative projects on Denton’s public spaces which will improve the town’s connectivity. Key features include:

The first phase of improvement works are due to be delivered by March 2026, underlying the council’s commitment to progressing the transformation of the town.

Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Growth, Housing and Homelessness Cllr Andrew McLaren said: “The plans represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform Denton town centre. They reflect what residents told us they want, including better public spaces, improved transport links, and a town centre that celebrates local identity. It will be great to get these early works underway and see changes happening soon.”

Delivery of the work will take place in phases through to 2028. The council is also actively seeking to secure further funding to help expand the programme in order to fully realise the vision for the town’s future. For more information and updates, visit www.tameside.gov.uk/destinationdenton
