Tameside Libraries are hosting a series of activities and sessions to encourage more residents to read for pleasure and visit their local libraries.
The monthly events, held to recognise 2026 National Year of Reading, aim to celebrate and foster a joy of books and reading.
These free sessions will come in many different formats, suitable for all ages and abilities, aiming to revitalise reading for pleasure in Tameside.
This year’s theme is to ‘Go All In’, encouraging people to read about whatever interests them most. This also helps to raise awareness of the benefits of reading such as expanded vocabulary, increased creativity, and a sharper mind.
A “readathon” will take place on 4 February to celebrate National Read Aloud Day at Ashton Library. From 10:30am to 4:30pm, readers will take turns sharing stories aloud in a continuous relay. Invited readers, including local authors and Readers’ Group members will be reading from their own works and some of their favourite pieces of literature.
Anyone wishing to watch can either drop-in or visit the livestream via the Library Facebook @TamesideLibraries.
For National Storytelling Week (31 January–8 February), every Tameside library will also host after school storytelling sessions.
Residents who join Tameside Libraries in 2026, will receive a shiny gold-coloured membership card to honour the celebratory year for reading.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture Cllr Leanne Feeley said: “We are so excited to step into the year of reading. Our libraries have a fantastic programme of activities and sessions designed to inspire residents to read more. Reading offers so many benefits, and we’re encouraging everyone across Tameside to get involved. Come along and discover what your local library has to offer!”
