Local Studies and Archive Centre recognised for high standards

Date Released - 26/01/2026

TAMESIDES Local Studies and Archive Centre has once again been recognised for its high standards, retaining its accredited status for the seventh consecutive year.

A volunteers’ afternoon was held at the end of January at the Local Studies Centre, to celebrate the award and a certificate of achievement was received by the team.

Tameside Council’s centre has met the agreed UK standards for archive services on its policies, processes and engagements. As a result, it can remain a place of deposit for documents such as council and court records.

This achievement reflects the hard work and passion of both Tameside Council staff and local volunteers, who have contributed over 1,000 hours over the past year.

The team work to preserve documents in controlled temperatures and organise a range of file types for residents to access, they also assist with family history research, cleaning archives, scanning photographs, and much more.

The National Archives Accreditation Panel recognised that this is a “well-managed archive service, delivered by a new team that has successfully come together over the last year”.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture Cllr Leanne Feeley said: “The team and volunteers at Local Studies have done an incredible job to help retain accredited status and it is such a testament to their hard work. Their attention to detail and genuine passion for the roles has kept Local Studies a place of deposit, and the recognition is truly deserved.”
