Hyde Town Hall – including the library - will be closed for the rest of this week following a small fire in its basement.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident just before 9am on Tuesday 24 February. All visitors and staff were safely evacuated from the building – no one was hurt.
It is believed the fire was caused by an electric fault. Any damage is currently being assessed.
In the meantime, the building will remain temporarily closed until at least Monday 2 March. As part of this, Hyde Library will be temporarily closed with no Open+ access available. All other libraries are open as usual www.tameside.gov.uk/libraries/openingtimes. Please call 0161 342 4000 (option 1) for assistance.
Any room bookings have been moved to either Stalybridge Victoria Market Hall or Dukinfield Town Hall and meeting organisers have been informed directly.
Alternative arrangements are being made for staff who work in Hyde Town Hall.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Finance and Resources Cllr Hugh Roderick said: “Thank you to the fire service and our council colleagues who acted quickly and calmly to safely evacuate the building. While I believe the fire was only very small, it did lead to some smoke in the building and we’re currently working with partners to investigate further and assess any damage. We apologise for the inconvenience of the building being temporary closed but we’re working hard to make alternative arrangements for anyone affected and will endeavour to reopen the building as soon as possible.”
Further updates will be shared when available.
