Local organisation highlighted for Food Waste Action Week

Date Released - 09/03/2026

Power of Resilience is a local charity focused on reducing food waste and supporting residents facing financial hardship.

Tameside Council is highlighting the fantastic organisation, founded by Julie Mallinson, for Food Waste Action Week on 9 March – 15 March.

The team of over 30 volunteers works hard to support Tameside residents while also protecting the environment.

Established in January 2021, the organisation operates three food pantries across Tameside, offering a place for people to donate or collect food and essential items free of charge. They are based in Hyde and two in Stalybridge.

They actively encourage residents, businesses and organisations to share any surplus items so that nothing is wasted.

They also run a soup kitchen and provide event catering, using food and ingredients that would otherwise end up in landfill, ensuring it is used before it goes out of date.

In 2025, they were deservingly awarded ‘CIC Charity of the Year’ at the Pride of Tameside Business Awards.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods Councillor Laura Boyle said: “Power of Resilience CIC are an incredible organisation, and the work they’re doing benefits Tameside in so many ways. Not only do they provide crucial support to residents in need, but they also help reduce food waste and lower our borough’s carbon footprint. Keep up the fantastic work, it’s truly appreciated”.

Executive Director of the Power of Resilience CIC, Julie Mallinson said: “A proud moment of ours is seeing children that are engaging with our community kitchen, they are starting to eat food they never would have tried before. The children can learn to cook from scratch using food they’ve found in the pantry or that we’ve had donated, which is amazing to see”.
