Think Green and take part in the Great British Spring Clean

Date Released - 13/03/2026

Residents are being encouraged to get involved in the national Great British Spring Clean (GBSC) campaign to help promote a cleaner, tidier Tameside.

From 13 to 29 March, residents, community groups, schools and businesses are invited to make a pledge and take part in litter picks across the borough to help tackle littering and mess.

Participants can then report back their litter pick results, to contribute to the national count of waste collected and litter picks completed.

There are Litter Hubs which are based in local community spaces across the borough. Individuals or groups can book free equipment via a local hub, including hi-vis jackets, litter pickers and black bags. Waste and rubbish will then be arranged to be disposed of appropriately.

The Litter Hubs run year-round, not just during the GBSC, and anyone can visit to conduct a litter pick.

The Our Streets campaign highlights that keeping our neighbourhoods clean and welcoming is a shared responsibility. Everyone has a role to play, and residents, businesses, and community groups are encouraged to get involved and help contribute to a tidier Tameside.

Cllr Laura Boyle, Tameside Council Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “We’re encouraging anyone who can to take part in the Great British Spring Clean. It’s a fantastic chance to show pride in our towns by keeping them clean and tidy. A little really does go a long way, and when we work together, we make a big difference.

“We have street cleaning teams every day, but they can’t keep up with the amount of litter dropped in the borough on their own – we all have a part to play. Thank you to everyone, including all the fantastic local litter picking groups, who helps to look after their local areas.”

Residents can find their nearest Litter Hub and learn how to take part by visiting the council’s website at www.tameside.gov.uk/litterhubs or contacting their local community venue.
