Mossley Community Centre secures long‑term lease to protect its future

Date Released - 19/03/2026

Mossley Community Centre is set for a stable future as Tameside Council takes forward a proposal to their Executive Cabinet to enter into a new long‑term lease with the centre’s trustees.

The renewal of the lease will secure the centre’s status as a dedicated community facility, allowing it to continue delivering a wide range of activities and services for residents of all ages. More than 600 people use the centre each week, and it plays a key role in supporting inclusion, social connection and wellbeing across Mossley.

As the landlord, the Council will also be investing £25k to carry out essential compliance and maintenance works to the building.

These works will ensure the building remains safe, functional and fit for purpose, enabling the trustees to focus on delivering and expanding community activity within the space.

The renewal lease—set for a 25‑year term —will include a commitment to continued community use, with the restrictive user clause ensuring the building remains dedicated to social and recreational activities for the benefit of the public.

The Council will also work collaboratively with the trustees to support applications for external grant funding to help the centre pursue future upgrades and improvements.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Finance and Resources, Councillor Hugh Roderick, said: “Mossley Community Centre is a much‑valued space that brings people together and supports residents of all ages. Renewing the lease is an important step in safeguarding its future as a community hub.

"We want to fulfil our responsibilities as landlord and to work with the trustees to ensure the centre remains a safe and welcoming place for years to come.”

Lesley Bill, Chair of Mossley Community Centre, said: “After several years of uncertainty about its future, Mossley Community Centre is delighted that Tameside Council’s Cabinet has voted to award the association’s trustees a 25‑year lease for the building, ensuring the centre’s place in the town for many more years.

“We’d like to thank everyone involved in renewing the lease. There has been a lot of hard work and negotiation behind the scenes, and it is fabulous to see the building will now get the long-term investment that it deserves, we can’t wait to see what’s to come!”
