More families gain first‑choice primary school for second year running

Date Released - 16/04/2026

More than 95 per cent of families across Tameside have been offered their first‑choice primary school place for a second year in a row.

The Tameside Council data shows that over 95 per cent of children starting Reception in September 2026 have been allocated their preferred school. This represents an increase on the ten‑year average of 92.5 per cent.

The success rate rises further when wider preferences are considered, with 98 per cent of families receiving either their first or second choice primary school place.

In total, 2,548 Reception places have been allocated across Tameside’s mainstream primary schools for the September intake.

Emlyn Wright, Assistant Director for Education & Inclusion at Tameside Council said: “We know how important it is for families to secure a place at their preferred primary school, so it is very encouraging to see such high levels of first‑choice offers once again this year. These results demonstrate the continued work taking place across Tameside to ensure we have sufficient school places available and that families are supported throughout the admissions process.”

Applications for primary school places closed in November 2025, with families able to list up to six schools in order of preference. Families have now been informed of their allocations ahead of the new school year.
